Oconee Hill Cemetery (Cemetery)

Oconee Hill Cemetery was established when the city of Athens acquired 17 acres beside the North Oconee River in 1855 and organized a board of trustees in 1856 to replace the crowded old Jackson Street burying ground near the University of Georgia. Laid out in the rural cemetery style and later expanded across the river via an 1899 iron truss bridge, its landscaped grounds are considered one of the finest Victorian cemeteries in the country and were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. Among its notable burials are Crawford W. Long, the physician credited with pioneering anesthesia, aviation pioneer Ben Epps, Georgia governor Wilson Lumpkin, and B-52's guitarist Ricky Wilson.
