GeorgiaSandy Creek Nature Center is a 225-acre nature preserve and environmental-education facility in Athens, Georgia, laced with more than five miles of trails, including an ADA-accessible boardwalk through wetlands and hardwood forest. It grew out of a 1972 grassroots effort by area citizens, who enlisted nature-center advocate John Ripley Forbes to establish the Northeast Georgia Nature Center, formally launched in 1973. The nonprofit board deeded the property to Clarke County in 1981, and the center took its present name in 1990. Its Education and Visitor Center houses live-animal and natural-history exhibits and a planetarium, the latter added during a major SPLOST-funded expansion completed in 2012. Today the center offers programs in ecology, wildlife, and conservation for schools and the public.
