Oak Grove Cemetery

Also recorded as Beard Cemetery, this secluded burial ground lies on rural farmland roughly sixteen miles west of Newton, now part of Willow Nook Farms. Its history is bound to Christ C.M.E. Church, a congregation formed by Black residents after emancipation; before the Civil War those same families had worshipped alongside the area's white planters in a hand-hewn log meetinghouse. A local planter deeded the wooded tract to the freed community, and the graveyard sits beside the former site of the old Oak Grove Baptist Church. Reachable only by dirt roads winding through the surrounding fields, it remains one of Baker County's more remote historic sites.
