Memory Hill Cemetery opened in 1804 on one of the twenty-acre public squares set aside in Milledgeville's original town plan, and it long carried the name Cemetery Square. Its grounds hold many figures central to Georgia history, including author Flannery O'Connor, longtime Congressman Carl Vinson, U.S. Senator and jurist L.Q.C. Lamar, Confederate general George P. Doles, early governors and legislators, and both enslaved and free people of the antebellum capital. Visitors frequently leave peacock feathers, stones, and small tokens at O'Connor's grave.
