Julia died before the house was finished, and after a 1906 tornado tore off the roof the manor was never fully restored, its shell left standing amid the gardens as decades of family misfortune passed. Beginning in the late 1990s the property was revived as an upscale resort that deliberately preserves the roofless manor as a picturesque ruin. Visitors tour the gardens, the manor-house museum, and the grounds that grew from Barnsley's 19th-century vision.
