It is the county's third courthouse: the first stood at Cassville while this was still Cass County and was burned along with most of that town by General Sherman's troops in 1864, after which the county seat moved to Cartersville and a second courthouse was built in 1873, its proceedings famously interrupted whenever trains passed on the adjacent railroad. The county itself was renamed for Colonel Francis S. Bartow, a Georgian killed at the First Battle of Manassas in 1861. The present courthouse, which replaced that unsatisfactory 1873 building, was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 18, 1980. The Civil War destruction that shaped the county seat belongs to the vanished Cassville courthouse rather than to the current Cartersville building.
