GeorgiaThe Berrien County Courthouse in Nashville was completed in 1898 to designs by the Walter Chamberlin firm of Knoxville, a prolific Southern courthouse architect, replacing a two-story log courthouse that had stood on the site since 1858. The two-story red-brick building anchors the town square, its west portico carrying four tall columns up to a pediment, and it was framed with iron beams and laid with cement floors to make it very nearly fireproof. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 9, 1977. The county's last legal hanging was carried out not at the courthouse but at the adjacent Old Berrien County Jail, a separate 1903 structure on North Jefferson Street that is itself individually listed on the National Register. A full interior renovation in 1981 preserved much of the courthouse's original detailing and color scheme.
