Jones Chapel Cemetery

This South Macon burial ground grew up around a Methodist congregation on old Windsor Hill, and it took its name in 1871 when members christened their newly built church 'Jones Chapel' in honor of the Rev. James 'Uncle Jimmie' Jones. The oldest legible headstone dates to the early 1860s, and researchers have identified at least 25 Confederate veterans among those interred here. The church building itself was moved to Beech Avenue in 1904, while the cemetery, later renamed Combs Cemetery for a former owner and also called the South Macon Cemetery, fell into neglect before volunteers reclaimed it from the encroaching woods.
