The Museum of Arts and Sciences is Georgia's largest institution devoted jointly to the arts and the sciences, located on Forsyth Road in Macon. It began in 1956 in the basement of the old Wesleyan Conservatory and moved to its present campus in 1964. The complex includes the Mark Smith Planetarium, opened in 1965, which projects a night sky of more than 4,000 stars, along with rotating art and science galleries and an artist-in-residence studio. An outdoor area known as the Backyard houses the museum's live animals, among them an alligator, tamarins, a kinkajou, snakes, and birds, making it a longstanding family destination in Middle Georgia.
