The Story
Rose Hill Cemetery opened in 1840 on a bluff above the Ocmulgee River and was named for Simri Rose, the horticulturist and city planner who designed its terraced, park-like landscape. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, the 50-acre grounds hold several Confederate generals, U.S. senators, Georgia governors, and roughly 600 Civil War soldiers. It is perhaps best known today as the resting place of Allman Brothers Band members Duane Allman and Berry Oakley, whose graves draw music fans from around the world.
