Fort McAllister was an earthen Confederate fort on the south bank of the Ogeechee River guarding the southern approaches to Savannah. Between 1862 and 1863 it withstood seven Union naval bombardments, its sand-and-earth walls absorbing fire that would have shattered masonry. The Second Battle of Fort McAllister, on December 13, 1864, ended differently: a roughly 4,000-man division under Brig. Gen. William B. Hazen stormed the landward side and overwhelmed its garrison of about 230 defenders in some fifteen minutes, giving Sherman's March to the Sea its outlet to the sea and sealing the fall of Savannah.
