The Story
This burial ground surrounds the site of Old Bark Camp Baptist Church near Midville, a congregation organized in 1788 that became one of the area's early religious anchors before its meeting house was abandoned in the late 1950s. Many of those laid to rest here helped shape the religious and political life of Burke and the neighboring Emanuel, Jenkins, and Jefferson counties. In 2003, local residents formed a restoration committee to save the old church building and to reclaim and repair the weathered headstones scattered across the cemetery.
