The Story
The Battle of Buck Head Creek was fought November 28, 1864, during the opening days of Sherman's March to the Sea, in present-day Jenkins County (then part of Burke County), Georgia. Union cavalry under Brig. Gen. Judson Kilpatrick, raiding toward the railroad and the Camp Lawton prison near Millen, were surprised and nearly captured by Maj. Gen. Joseph Wheeler's Confederate horsemen; a rearguard stand by the 5th Ohio Cavalry behind rail barricades, supported by artillery, checked the pursuit before the bridge over the creek was burned. Reported losses were about 46 Union and an estimated 600 Confederate.
