McBean Cemetery

Set along River Road south of the Richmond County line, this cemetery marks the vanished site of Old McBean Baptist Church, whose original log meeting house was raised in the mid-1700s and ranked among the oldest in the Baptist union. A rebuilt church erected in 1870 under Rev. Hamp Carswell of Hephzibah drew large crowds before rural depopulation left it deserted by the early twentieth century, after which the building was sold and moved away. Over the years the graveyard has also been recorded under other names, including the Miller-Peek and Busbee family cemeteries, and many of its earliest graves remain unmarked.
