The Story
On a September evening in 1803, thirteen believers gathered in the Beech Branch community and organized the congregation that would become Sardis Baptist Church, admitted to the Hephzibah Baptist Association the following year. After a new meeting house was raised near Boggy Gut Creek, the church took the name Sardis in 1810, and in 1867 the congregation split along racial lines, with its Black members reviving the original Beech Branch name. The small crossroads once nicknamed 'Frog Wallow' was later renamed Sardis in the church's honor, and the site of the old meeting house is today the church cemetery.
