The Story
The Ladies Memorial Association of Waynesboro, organized in September 1866, gathered the scattered remains of Confederate soldiers killed in skirmishes across Burke County during the fighting that accompanied Sherman's 1864 march through Georgia and reinterred them at this site. Roughly forty-five to forty-nine soldiers rest here, a dozen or more of them unidentified. The association unveiled a granite monument to the dead in the late 1870s, and the grounds remain a focal point of the town's Civil War memory.
