The Story
The Calhoun County Courthouse in Morgan has risen from the ashes more than once: the county's first courthouse burned in 1888, its 1889 brick successor burned in 1920, and the present Colonial Revival building was erected in 1935 to designs by architect T. F. Lockwood Jr. The seat itself was also fought over, in a small county-seat war: by referendum in 1923 the legislature moved county government to Arlington, but Morgan's voters petitioned to reclaim it and won the seat back in 1929. The brick courthouse was renovated in 1972 and remains the center of county government. It is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places under the Georgia County Courthouses thematic listing.
