Designed by architect Julian de Bruyn Kops and constructed by McGowan & Ramsey, it is the only Gothic Revival courthouse in Georgia, distinguished by battlemented parapets, drip-mold window crowns, and a castellated front portico, and it long doubled as a venue for community meetings and events as well as court sessions. Camden is one of Georgia's eight original counties, created by the first state constitution in 1777 out of lands settled during the British colonial period. The courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 and is a contributing building in the Woodbine Historic District.
