The Story
Set near the ruins of the Dungeness estate on Cumberland Island, this small burial ground holds members of the Carnegie family, whose Gilded Age fortune shaped the island's later history. A 1977 survey of Cumberland recorded it as one of two cemeteries near Dungeness. Although the ground now lies within National Park Service land, the plot is still cared for by Carnegie descendants. Nearly everyone interred here was a Carnegie, the exception being the Page family, who worked for Mrs. Carnegie.
