Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Marys was established in 1788, making it one of the oldest public burial grounds in Georgia, with its earliest legible marker dating to 1801. The grounds hold roughly 29 soldiers of the American Revolution along with veterans of every later American conflict, and they reflect the coastal town's layered past, including French Acadian refugees who settled here after their expulsion from Nova Scotia and victims of yellow fever epidemics. Historically divided into separate white, Black, and newer sections, the cemetery anchors the St. Marys Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
