The Story
Hillcrest Cemetery, also known as the Villa Rica City Cemetery, grew out of the old Chambers Burying Ground, where a pioneer family that had settled near the springs off present-day Leslie Drive marked their graves with box-shaped granite slabs. The town acquired the surrounding lots in 1887 during the term of its first mayor, Capt. Nathaniel H. Humphries, and the brick entrance columns facing Highway 78 were added in 1934. Spread across roughly eleven acres and long tended by the local garden club, the grounds hold many of Villa Rica's earliest residents and carry a marker for the Blue Star Memorial Byway.
