The Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19-20, 1863, in Catoosa and Walker counties, was the largest Confederate victory in the Western Theater and the bloodiest two-day battle of the Civil War, with roughly 34,000 combined casualties. A breakthrough by Confederate Gen. James Longstreet's troops routed much of the Union army under Maj. Gen. William Rosecrans, driving it back into Chattanooga. The ground was preserved in 1890 as part of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, the first and largest national military park in the United States.
