Established by Congress in 1890 and dedicated in 1895, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park is the oldest and largest of the U.S. national military parks. It preserves the ground of the September 19-20, 1863 Battle of Chickamauga, a major Confederate victory and the bloodiest two-day fight of the Western Theater, as well as the subsequent November 1863 battles for Chattanooga that gave the Union control of the gateway to the Deep South. The Georgia portion around Fort Oglethorpe in Catoosa County holds more than 600 monuments and hundreds of markers, including the landmark Wilder Brigade Monument.
