The Story
The Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens occupy a historic site south of Savannah once famous as the Bamboo Farm, tracing back to bamboo clumps planted in the late 1800s that grew into a towering timber grove by 1915. The stand drew botanist David Fairchild, and in 1919 his associate Barbour Lathrop bought the property, which later became a USDA plant-introduction station. The University of Georgia acquired the roughly 51-acre grounds in 1983 as an education and research center, and in 2012 it was renamed the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens. Its bamboo collection of around 60 taxa is considered the largest publicly accessible bamboo planting east of California, complemented by camellia, rose, and children's garden displays.
