The Story
Colonial Park Cemetery was established in 1750, when Savannah was capital of Britain's Georgia colony, and it served as the city's principal burial ground until it closed to new interments in 1853. Its roughly six acres hold more than 9,000 graves, among them Button Gwinnett, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, along with Revolutionary War figures such as Major General Lachlan McIntosh and Samuel Elbert. In 1913 the Daughters of the American Revolution erected a memorial arch at the entrance honoring the patriots buried within.
