The Story
The burial ground at Fort Pulaski National Monument on Cockspur Island holds soldiers, laborers, and family members connected to the fort, including thirteen Confederate officers who died in captivity there during the winter of 1864 to 1865. These men were among the 'Immortal 600,' captured Confederate officers held under harsh conditions and meager rations as an act of Civil War retaliation, most succumbing to dysentery and scurvy. While the Union dead were later reinterred at Beaufort National Cemetery in South Carolina, the Confederate graves remained on the island.
