Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary (Museum)

Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary protects roughly 22 square miles of hard-bottom, live-bottom reef in the Atlantic about 19 miles off Sapelo Island and southeast of Savannah. Designated by President Jimmy Carter on January 16, 1981, it was the fourth site in the National Marine Sanctuary System and takes its name from Milton "Sam" Gray, who charted the area. The reef supports nearly 1,000 invertebrate species and some 200 fish species, along with visiting loggerhead sea turtles and the endangered North Atlantic right whale, whose calving grounds lie nearby. Though managed by NOAA as an offshore protected area rather than a walk-in facility, Gray's Reef anchors education and outreach programming based on the Georgia coast.
