LePageville Memorial Cemetery

LePageville Memorial Cemetery preserves the legacy of a vanished African American railroad and mill village founded in 1885, when Robert LePage laid out affordable worker housing, garden plots, and a church on former Brewton Hill Plantation land for laborers at the Savannah, Florida and Western Railway's riverfront wharf. Records suggest at least 500 people were buried here between roughly 1888 and 1967, among them longshoremen and workers who helped build Liberty ships during World War II. After the city condemned and demolished the village in 1967, community activist Patricia Jenkins led a years-long effort that culminated in the cemetery's preservation under the LePageville Memorial Cemetery Corporation in the early 2000s.
