The Story
Established in 1765 on land set aside by Levi Sheftall, a Savannah-born Jewish merchant who served during the American Revolution, this small walled burial ground in West Savannah is among the oldest Jewish cemeteries in the United States. It holds members of the founding Sheftall, de Lyon, and De La Motta families, descendants of the group of European Jews who arrived in the colony aboard the William and Sarah in 1733. Closed to new burials in 1861, the cemetery is today owned and maintained by Congregation Mickve Israel.
