The University of Georgia was chartered by the Georgia General Assembly on January 27, 1785, making it the first state-chartered university in the United States; the charter was written by Abraham Baldwin, a Yale-educated lawyer who became the school's first president. Instruction began in 1801 after John Milledge donated 633 acres along the Oconee River in what became Athens, and the school was originally named Franklin College in honor of Benjamin Franklin. Its first class graduated in 1804, and the iconic wrought-iron Arch, modeled on the state seal, has marked the campus entrance since the mid-19th century.
