The Story
The Battle of Jonesborough, fought August 31 - September 1, 1864 in Clayton County about 20 miles south of Atlanta, was the decisive engagement of Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. Union forces struck the Macon & Western Railroad, the last open supply line into Atlanta; a Confederate attack under Gen. William J. Hardee on August 31 was repulsed, and Federal assaults the next day broke Hardee's line. With the railroad lost, Confederate Gen. John Bell Hood evacuated Atlanta, and Union troops occupied the city on September 2, 1864.
