Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park preserves roughly 2,900 acres of the June 1864 Atlanta Campaign battleground near Marietta, Georgia. The climactic Battle of Kennesaw Mountain (June 18-July 2, 1864) pitted Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman against Gen. Joseph E. Johnston; Sherman's June 27 frontal assault was bloodily repulsed, especially at Cheatham Hill (the "Dead Angle"), with about 5,350 total casualties, though Johnston later withdrew toward Atlanta. First protected in 1917 and transferred to the National Park Service in 1933, the park today interprets earthworks, the Illinois Monument, and the wartime Kolb farmhouse.
