GeorgiaThe Marietta Confederate Cemetery was established in September 1863, when Jane Porter Glover donated a corner of her Bushy Park plantation to bury roughly twenty Confederate soldiers killed in a nearby train wreck north of Marietta. After the Civil War it grew into one of the largest Confederate burial grounds in the South, as Georgia funded the recovery and reinterment of men who had died at battlefields such as Chickamauga, Kennesaw Mountain, and Kolb's Farm; more than 3,000 soldiers now rest here, drawn from every Confederate state as well as Missouri, Maryland, and Kentucky. The original wooden grave markers had decayed by the early 1900s, erasing many names, and were replaced with the uniform marble headstones that mark the graves today.
