The cemetery adjoins New Providence Baptist Church, founded in 1868 in the Cobb County foothills by Confederate veterans returning from the Civil War, who first gathered in a former roadside tavern before completing their first sanctuary in 1871. Following the old custom of setting aside ground beside the church, the congregation opened its cemetery on the site, recording its first burial on June 9, 1875, with the death of Mary Johnston. The church rebuilt after fires in 1878 and 1901, and the surrounding graveyard has remained in use by the community.
