The Story
Rose Hill Cemetery was laid out in 1885 by Dilmus Lyle and Newton A. Morse and, though begun as a private venture, quickly became the burial ground for the town of Austell; the City of Austell purchased it in 1891 to serve as its municipal cemetery. Some graves predating 1885 were relocated here from scattered family plots in the surrounding countryside, and recurring family names such as Barnes, Maner, Dunn, Glore, Causey, and Medlock reflect the area's early settlers. The grounds display a range of memorial styles, from rough-hewn stone markers of the late nineteenth century to granite and marble statuary added in every decade since.
