The Story
Douglas City Cemetery is the municipal burying ground of Douglas, the Coffee County seat, and one of the largest historic cemeteries in the region with several thousand recorded graves. Its earliest documented burial is that of David H. Kirkland, who died in 1865; in 1976 the city set a commemorative plaque beside his original marker as part of its American Bicentennial observances. Laid out on North Gaskin Avenue, the cemetery traces the town's growth from the mid-nineteenth century onward and remains in active use.
