The Story
Greenfield Cemetery surrounds the site of Greenfield Presbyterian Church, built around 1850 by Vermont-born minister Joel Spencer Graves and remembered as the first brick building in Colquitt County. During the Civil War the church was pressed into service as a Confederate hospital, and unmarked graves of soldiers who died there still line the edge of the grounds. Among those buried here are Rev. Graves and Dr. Baker Ewing Watkins, the county's first physician and its first school commissioner.
