It was in that older square courthouse, not the modern justice center, that Coweta's most famous trial unfolded in 1948, when wealthy landowner John Wallace was tried for the murder of tenant farmer Wilson Turner. The case became nationally known through Margaret Anne Barnes's book Murder in Coweta County and its 1983 television film, in part because Wallace was among the first white men in Georgia sentenced to death largely on the testimony of Black witnesses. Wallace was convicted and executed in 1950. Today the justice center houses the county's active courts while the restored 1904 courthouse serves as a civic and events venue.
