The Story
This small burial ground on the former Hawkins plantation near Roberta holds the grave of Colonel Benjamin Hawkins (1754-1816), the young United States' principal agent to the Southern Indian tribes. After representing North Carolina in the Continental Congress and the U.S. Senate, Hawkins spent his last two decades operating his agency along the Flint River frontier that later became Crawford County, and he was buried on his own land here.
