The Story
Old Bethel Cemetery grew up around Old Bethel Methodist Church, established in 1849 on land donated by Vincent "Jack" Nichols (1804-1876). Nichols, a local mill owner who also served as a Mason and justice of the peace, sawed and gave much of the timber used to raise the church and remained one of its leaders until his death. A stone placed by his descendants in 1992 marks the site of the vanished church, and the burial ground still holds the graves of the Nichols family and their Crawford County neighbors.
