Sunnyside Cemetery on East 8th Avenue is the principal municipal burial ground of Cordele, the seat of Crisp County, and the largest cemetery in the area with well over six thousand recorded graves. Among its interments are two figures of note: novelist Mac Hyman (1923-1963), whose comic bestseller 'No Time for Sergeants' was later adapted for stage and screen, and Michael Isreal Welch (1844-1908), a nineteenth-century inventor remembered for work on the railroad car coupling. The grounds hold generations of Cordele residents, with burials reaching back to the early decades of the twentieth century.
