Springer Mountain, elevation about 3,782 feet in the Chattahoochee National Forest on the Fannin-Gilmer county line, is the southern terminus of the 2,190-plus-mile Appalachian National Scenic Trail. The terminus was moved here in 1958 from Mount Oglethorpe, roughly 14 miles south, to escape encroaching development. A bronze plaque bearing the Appalachian Trail emblem, along with a hiker register, marks the summit where northbound thru-hikers begin their journey to Maine.
