In 1891 A. Cohn & Company bought 14,000 acres here for shade-grown cigar-wrapper tobacco, briefly the world's largest tobacco plantation. Cheesecloth tents filtered sunlight to produce thin, fine leaves until rising labor costs ended the era by 1975.
