It should not be confused with the historic Old DeKalb County Courthouse on the Decatur square, a 1916 neoclassical building by J. W. Golucke that served until 1967 and now holds the DeKalb History Center. Five county courthouses have stood on that downtown square since 1823, an earlier one lost to an 1842 fire. The square saw hard Civil War use: during the Battle of Atlanta on July 22, 1864, Confederate cavalry under Joseph Wheeler struck a Union wagon train near the Decatur courthouse, and Federal troops then occupied the town square through the fall of Atlanta. In November 1864 Sherman's left wing marched through Decatur at the start of the March to the Sea. All of that history belongs to the old square, not to the modern Camp Circle annex.
