History
Emory traces its origins to December 1836, when the Georgia legislature chartered Emory College in the newly created village of Oxford, naming it for Methodist bishop John Emory. The college closed during the Civil War and did not reopen until 1866. In 1915, with land and financial backing from Coca-Cola magnate Asa Griggs Candler, the institution was rechartered as Emory University and established a new campus in the Druid Hills section of Atlanta, while the original Oxford site continues today as Emory's Oxford College.
