The Story
Standing on the courthouse square in Vienna, the Dooly County Courthouse was built in the early 1890s to designs by the firm of Parkins and Heard, its Romanesque styling marking it as the fourth courthouse to serve the county since Dooly's creation in 1821. Constructed of brick, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 18, 1980, and was sympathetically renovated in the late 1980s. The square it anchors has long been the civic center of a cotton-and-peanut county in south-central Georgia, and Vienna is known today for its long-running Big Pig Jig barbecue festival. The courthouse remains the seat of county government and one of the town's defining landmarks.
