The association adopted the Albany Museum of Art name in 1980, and in 1983 opened a facility on Meadowlark Drive with a permanent installation of traditional African art. Today the museum holds 19th- and 20th-century American and European paintings, prints, sculpture, and photography, alongside what is considered one of the largest collections of sub-Saharan African art in the Southeast outside a university setting, including masks, carvings, textiles, and gold weights.
