One of Albany's older public burial grounds, Oakview Cemetery holds the graves of several figures central to the city's early history. Among them is Nelson Tift (1810-1891), the New England-born merchant who founded Albany in the 1830s and went on to serve in the U.S. Congress. Two other nineteenth-century U.S. congressmen, William Ephraim Smith and Lott Warren, are buried here as well, giving the cemetery an unusual concentration of the region's founding-era leaders.
