The Story
Swainsboro City Cemetery is the municipal burying ground of the Emanuel County seat and, with well over 6,000 recorded interments, is by far the largest cemetery in the county. Its most widely known grave is that of Paul Jennings Hill (1954-2003), a former minister turned militant anti-abortion activist who fatally shot a physician and his volunteer escort outside a Pensacola, Florida clinic in 1994. Hill was executed by the State of Florida in 2003, becoming the first person in the United States put to death for an act of anti-abortion violence, and was returned to Swainsboro for burial.
