The Story
Known variously as Eli's Chapel or Hopewell Cemetery, this McCaysville-area burial ground carries a layered past that has made its older graves hard to trace. According to those who maintain it, the original interment map was lost in a fire, and many early graves that had been marked only with large fieldstones lost their identification when the stones were cleared away years ago to make mowing easier. With more than five hundred documented burials, it remains an active reflection of the surrounding community.
